Queer Books Unbound Birthday Extravaganza: Guest Post by Robin Covington
Hi everyone! We’re super excited to have Robin Covington and her characters from The Convenient Husband with us today!
Hi Robin! Welcome to Queer Books Unbound! Welcome Isaiah and Victor! We’re excited to have you with us today!
Victor: We couldn’t be happier to help you celebrate! I’m always up for a party!
Isaiah: He is always up for a party. . .
Victor (nudging his husband and leaning over to press a kiss to his cheek): And you love me for it.
Isaiah: I do. (He nods towards the interviewer) How ‘bout we answer some questions?
What is the thing you admired the most about your husband?
Isaiah: His passion. His passion for dance. For life. For fighting for what he believes in.
Victor: You thought it was annoying at first.
Isaiah: But not for long. Your turn . . .
Victor: That’s so easy, I admired what a great father he is. I couldn’t stay away from him.
What is a thing he does that really irritates you sometimes?
Victor: Leaves his dirty socks on the floor of the room. Right next to the hamper. Right next to it!
Isaiah: I used to leave them in the bathroom. I’m getting closer to the hamper, at least I’m in the bedroom now.
Victor: You can get a football into the end zone but you can’t get socks into a hamper.
Isaiah: I’ll work on it.
Victor: You better! (He makes a motion at his husband) So, what about me irritates you?
Isaiah: Every time you cook, the kitchen looks like a bomb went off. (he shrugs) But I love your cooking so I’ll keep cleaning up the mess.
When you want to convince your husband to do something he’s not so sure about or doesn’t want to do, what is a thing you do you know will change the others mind/get your way?
Victor: A blow job always works.
Isaiah: I don’t think that’s what she was looking for . . .
Victor: It totally works.
Okaay, on to the next question, shall we? 😉
You both have busy schedules. So what is your favorite activity to relax?
Victor: See the answer to number 3.
Isaiah: Babe . . .
Victor: Okay! Okay! We love to got to the beach house together. (He looks at his husband and they link their hands together)
Isaiah: The beach house is our place.
What is something you’ve never told your husband?
Isaiah: Hmmmm . . . The “People” magazine subscription is not for Evan . . . I got it for me.
Victor: That’s not a secret. We all know that already . . .
Rapid fire questions:
Who’s the biggest baby when they’re sick?
Victor: Me.
Isaiah: Him
Favorite pizza topping?
Isaiah: Sausage
Victor: Everything.
Who has the bigger sweet tooth?
Victor: Isaiah
Isaiah: Guilty
Who steals the blanket in the night?
Isaiah: Me.
Victor: Yep!
You go out with a group of friends. Who is the one *not* offering to pay the bill?
Victor: Me!
Isaiah: uh huh.
Thank you!
NFL football player Isaiah Blackwell lost his husband three years ago and is raising their teen son alone. He lives his life as quietly as his job allows, playing ball to support his family but trying not to draw unwanted attention. His quiet life is shaken up when a mutual friend introduces him to Victor, a visiting principal ballet dancer who is everything Isaiah is not.
Brash and loud, Victor Aleksandrov has applied for political asylum to avoid returning to Russia, where gay men are targeted and persecuted. He’s been outspoken about gay rights in his home country, and if he doesn’t get asylum, going back to Russia is a death sentence.
Their one-night stand turns into a tentative friendship, a relationship they both agree is temporary… until Victor’s denied asylum. Isaiah can’t offer Victor a happily ever after, but he can propose something that’ll keep Victor in the US and safe… marriage. He just doesn’t expect his new husband to dance away with his heart.
