As many of you know, I got my Master’s degree from the University of Dublin in Ireland. That means I’ve spent a LOT of time traveling, mostly all over Europe but also parts of Africa. It’s an absolute blast and such a privilege to get to see the world, but it can also be cramped, dangerous, uncomfortable, and even lonely. I have a lot of stories along those lines, but here’s are some fun ones that I love to tell.

Traveling by plane isn’t as common in Europe as it is in America, because their public transportation is amazing. As a result, when I went on a six-week-long trip with a friend that started in Galway, Ireland, and ended in Madrid, Spain, we only flew once. We took a bus from Galway to Belfast, Northern Ireland. Then a ferry to Edinburgh, Scotland, and then an overnight bus to London. The only time we had to fly was when we made the jump from London to Madrid, and no one stamped our passports along the way. Once you’re over there, going from country to country is a breeze.

If any of you have read Harry Potter, you might remember the Knight Bus: the double-decker overnight bus. I kid you not when I say my friend and I rode on that exact bus when we went from Edinburgh to London. It’s an eight-hour drive, and when you only have a few days to spend in a country, that’s a lot of time. So, we decided to travel and sleep all at once, thanks to this totally cool bus that had a second floor that was all beds and hammocks. The bottom beds could fit two people (I’m 6’2”, so when I say I fit in this tiny bed on a bus, that’s a big statement), and then a third hammock hung over them. My friend and I got lucky and didn’t have a third person sleeping above us. I was terrified they’d roll over in the middle of the night and land on us! That was by far our funniest sleeping arrangement, minus this one hostel in London that had triple bunk beds. As in, not two beds, but three, stacked on top of each other. They went all the way up to the ceiling.

Another of my favorite travel stories is from Edinburgh. Hostels vary in size, and sometimes the rooms sleep as few as four people. But in other cases, they’re huge. My friend and I stayed in one that had thirty-eight beds in a single gym-sized room. We could see the castle from our window, and we made a lot of friends, but admittedly there was NO privacy. We actually ran into one girl whom we’d met back in Belfast there. It was amazing. Oh, and, *cough* it didn’t hurt that an entire Brazilian soccer team was staying in our room. The radiator broke, which made it sweltering, and they all walked around with their shirts off. They also slept in their skivvies. But of course, the, um, best part of Edinburgh was the sights. Er, the historical sights. *cough cough* As a feminist, I would never objectify those poor, young, handsome, muscular, fit, athletic–I forget where I was going with this.

In short, travel in my experience was always ten percent about the city and ninety percent about the experience. I hope to do a lot more of it!

Quinn Anderson is an alumna of the University of Dublin in Ireland and has a master’s degree in psychology. She wrote her dissertation on sexuality in popular literature and continues to explore evolving themes in erotica in her professional life.

A nerd extraordinaire, she was raised on an unhealthy diet of video games, anime, pop culture, and comics from infancy. Her girlfriend swears her sense of humor is just one big Joss Whedon reference. She stays true to her nerd roots in writing and in life, and frequently draws inspiration from her many fandoms, which include Yuri on Ice, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Buffy, and more. Growing up, while most of her friends were fighting evil by moonlight, Anderson was kamehameha-ing her way through all the shounen anime she could get her hands on. You will often find her interacting with fellow fans online and offline via conventions and Tumblr, and she is happy to talk about anything from nerd life to writing tips. She has attended conventions on three separate continents and now considers herself a career geek. She advises anyone who attends pop culture events in the UK to watch out for Weeping Angels, as they are everywhere. If you’re at an event, and you see a 6’2” redhead wandering around with a vague look on her face, that’s probably her.

Her favorite authors include J.K. Rowling, Gail Carson Levine, Libba Bray, and Tamora Pierce. When she’s not writing, she enjoys traveling, cooking, spending too much time on the internet, playing fetch with her cat, screwing the rules, watching Markiplier play games she’s too scared to play herself, and catching ’em all.
