Character Interview: Isaac Drake & Laurent St. Savoy

Today we have two very special guests over on From  Top to Bottom Reviews. Join us in our welcome to Isaac and Saint! We interviewed Avon Gale yesterday, and they simply refused to be left behind. We hope you enjoy this as much as we did, because these two can’t answer a question directly 😉 Not that we’re complaining, of course; this way was much more fun for us!

If you missed Avon’s interview yesterday, you’ll find it [here].

What are your 5 favourite songs at the moment? And also, what is your favourite tv show?

Isaac: I’m super into the Arctic Monkeys, though I did start listening to the Avett Brothers since Laurent likes them. As in, he actually told me he liked a band. Him actually liking something is rare, so. Lots of Avett Brothers lately in the Jeep.

Laurent: If I didn’t find something new to listen to, we’d be listening literally to nothing but the same Arctic Monkeys playlist. Isaac gets fixated on music like that.

Isaac: What? I do not.

Laurent: Go look at your recently played on Spotify.

Isaac: ….whatever.

Laurent: Exactly.

Isaac: Moving on! Er, I don’t watch TV, not really. Just hockey. I’m a Predators fan, in case you’re wondering.

Laurent: He DVR’d „The Voice“ when he lived with Coach Samarin and Coach Ashford.

Isaac: …okay, yeah, I like that show. Laurent watches cooking shows.

Laurent: Because the only thing either of us know how to cook is grilled chicken, Isaac.

Isaac: Yeah, but it’s really good grilled chicken. Most of the time.

Saint, am I allowed to call you Saint? You’re an artist and have drawn Isaac as a duck and also an angel. What tattoo would you design for Isaac if he asked you? (Thanks to Rennie for this question!)

Laurent: Sure, I don’t mind. And he wants me to draw him a Spitfire tattoo – the airplane with the growling face, and somehow incorporate a lip ring and blue hair.

Isaac: It’s gonna be badass! I’m gonna go get it with Hux. He’s a pro at getting tattoos.

Laurent: I’m going because I have to make sure they don’t get my drawing wrong.

Isaac: You are the one that has to look at it, so that’s a good idea.

Laurent: And it’s an artist thing.

Now for something more personal: What’s the most romantic thing you did for each other?

Laurent: ….basically Isaac putting up with me on a daily basis is the most romantic thing anyone could ever do for me.

Isaac: Laurent hates it when I answer these kinds of questions. But he helps me dye my hair, and he even helped me bleach it when the roots grew in.

Laurent: ….that one time I brought you lunch to the arena when I got out of class.

Isaac: He’s a prince among boyfriends, see? /smiles

Laurent: /shrugs, but smiles back.

Isaac you’re a very “vocal” character, do you plan to show up in more of Avon’s books outside of the Scoring Chances series? 😉 (Please say yes!)

Isaac: She always tells me something about ‚contracts‘ and blah blah blah, but I’ll definitely be in the next two SC books. And if she writes that one about Hux finding love with two adorable ladies, then I’ll definitely be in that one, too. I keep angling for my own spin-off series, and she pretends she has something very important to do (which, Avon, we all know is just „Twitter“).

[Avon: No comment.]

[We from FTtB wouldn’t mind such a spin-off series.. just saying ;)]

Okay, back to the questions, this is for both of you: What simple gesture do you do that melts the other one every time? Like something you know will make the other one agree to something.

Laurent: ….I don’t think we can really answer this on an interview, can we?

Isaac: Just look how hard he’s blushing, there’s your answer. /smirks

Laurent: Ugh, Isaac sometimes says things like a motivational poster and for some unknown reason, it actually works.

Isaac: Blame Coach Ashford. He loves saying shit like that.

Laurent: Yeah, but he’s not the reason I believe it.

Isaac: ….see, sometimes Laurent says stuff like that and I get all heart-eyes at him.

Laurent: /makes a face

Saint might bite our heads off for asking this, but how soon did you know that Isaac was “the one”?

Laurent: I didn’t even know that was a thing that existed. Um. „The One“ I mean.

Isaac: How about when I punched that guy in the face at the bar? Was it then?

Laurent: I think it was when you took me on that date to the lake. Even if those s’mores made a mess.

Isaac: You looked hot licking the marshmallow off your fingers, though.

Laurent: I’m really glad you’re so easy to please, Isaac.

Isaac: If I liked things easy, I wouldn’t be dating you.

Laurent: Fair point.

Isaac: I probably knew when I was happy to watch Laurent win the Kelly Cup in net instead of me. I’m usually not that selfless.

Laurent: You kind of are, though.

Isaac: Shhhh.

Did you two (together or alone) have a hard time convincing Avon to write a certain scene for you? Did it end up in the book or did she cut it?

Isaac: When she was first plotting this book (as much as she ever does that), Avon thought maybe Laurent would be a totally different character. Because at first, I was supposed to find Laurent in the shower and we were gonna have like, hate-sex makeouts or whatever. But no way, that is not me and I would never. I refused, even though it was really early on in her thought process about how this book would go.

Laurent: I think there was a scene she cut where me and Isaac made Twilight references. Is that what you mean?

[The author would like to point out it wasn’t cut, it was just changed. The scene is still in the book, boys. It was after your bar fight, and I don’t know why you wanted to make jokes about Twilight anyway.]

This one is more for Isaac since you, Saint, retired from hockey but maybe you can answer it too. What’s your favourite thing to do between seasons?

Saint: I liked training when I did off-ice stuff, actually. I like to run, so I started doing that again. A few times my dad actually allowed me to train with a goalie coach who wasn’t him, and I actually enjoyed it. Except then I’d have to show him what I learned and he’d tell me how I was either doing it wrong, or the thing I’d learned was stupid. Or both.

Isaac:…ugh, I still hate him. So much. And I…well, I’d go to Columbia during the off-season and uh. I didn’t like that so much. I liked the off-season I was living with Misha, since someone cooked for me and I did a lot of training.

Laurent: And watching Netflix.

Isaac: And that.

We all know that Avon writes LGBTQ-themed romance? Would you read it? If so what would be your favourite book/author?

Laurent: I don’t know how I feel about romance. I might read it, though. I usually read comics.

Isaac: I’m all about that life. I like that series about the cop who sees dead people and solves crimes, along with his hot detective boyfriend.

[Avon: Isaac is referring to Jordan Castillo Price’s Psycop series.]

Laurent: Oh, yeah, I read one of those. I liked it. It’d be cool as a graphic novel.

Already asked Isaac that for another interview [link] and he said he’d eat whatever you had so.. favourite pizza topping?

Laurent: Normal stuff, I guess. Cheese and pepperoni.

Isaac: You and Hux try those weird pizzas that they have at Pizza Hut all the time, like with the cheese in the crust and shit?

Laurent: Because Hux is weird, and those are usually on sale and we’re broke.

And a last one for Saint: What was your first thought upon meeting Mrs. Bowen? And favourite thing she baked for you?

Laurent: I thought she was nice, I guess.

Isaac: I thought she was awesome.

Laurent: Yo, it’s my question. Avon’s right, you really *do* try and get in everything.

Isaac: You love it.

Laurent: She makes these chocolate chip cookies – old standard, I guess, but nobody’s ever baked me cookies before. They’re delicious.

Isaac: I made you some.

Laurent: You bought cookie dough and ate it with a spoon.

Isaac: Yeah, but I shared the spoon. [Aww you two are so adorable!]

Thank you so much Avon for agreeing to do this interview!

Avon: Thank you so much for having me – and Laurent and Isaac, too 😉

We hope you all enjoyed it.

About the Author:
author-photo-169x300Avon Gale wrote her first story at the age of seven, about a “Space Hat” hanging on a rack and waiting for that special person to come along and purchase it — even if it was a bit weirder than the other, more normal hats. Like all of Avon’s characters, the space hat did get its happily ever after — though she’s pretty sure it was with a unicorn. She likes to think her vocabulary has improved since then, but the theme of quirky people waiting for their perfect match is still one of her favorites.

Avon grew up in the southern United States, and now lives with her very patient husband in a liberal midwestern college town. When she’s not writing, she’s either doing some kind of craft project that makes a huge mess, reading, watching horror movies, listening to music or yelling at her favorite hockey team to get it together, already. Avon is always up for a road trip, adores Kentucky bourbon, thinks nothing is as stress relieving as a good rock concert and will never say no to candy.

At one point, Avon was the mayor of both Jazzercise and Lollicup on Foursquare. This tells you basically all you need to know about her as a person.
